Principal, Real Estate Practice Group
Essential Functions:

The role of Real Estate Principal will include innovation around best practices that support our mission, contributions to external thought-leadership pieces and ecosystem development, and speaking engagements.
▪ Investment Sourcing and Evaluation: Collaboratively and proactively generate and evaluate investment opportunities that meet our investment thesis and criteria. Cultivate relationships within the values-aligned real estate community and partner organizations to develop high quality deal flow. Contribute to the initial screening of opportunities, performing the necessary research to assist in effective and efficient evaluation that is reflective of deep real estate investment experience.
▪ Investor Relations: Participate in fundraising efforts for the firm, including sourcing and securing new limited partners. Contribute to the education of a professional network about the firm’s overarching thesis and the RE Practice Group. Proactive engagement with our limited partner investor base.
▪ Investment Execution: Coordinate and lead the due diligence process, organizing team personnel to effectively engage with company leadership to comprehensively assess and prosecute investment opportunities. Direct and perform prospect engagement, financial modeling, and physical, operator, and market diligence. Compose, present, and defend Investment Committee Memorandums. Successfully negotiate and develop fair and balanced term sheets, leading deal personnel, transaction processes and service providers to ensure a timely investment closing.
▪ Portfolio and Asset Management: Seek to positively influence the optimization of portfolio investments and asset management assignments. Work with operating partners and clients to contribute to strategic, tactical, leadership, and impact decisions. Monitor quarterly financial and impact information and direct and review quarterly report drafting. Lead in the development, implementation, and continual improvement of BI (business intelligence) software for collecting and reporting portfolio information.
▪ Operations: Interface with the Sovereign’s operations team and service providers to lead and support required work in the following areas: fund administration, finance and accounting, tax preparation, valuations, audit, investor relations, CRM, general operations, and compliance.
▪ Firm Administration: Actively participate in regular and ad hoc team meeting cadence, monthly firm meetings, and our annual firm retreat. Abide by firm policy with respect to compliance requirements and expense reimbursement. Demonstrate consistent use of internal communication and CRM software. Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all firm personnel. Must have a “no job too big, no job too small” mentality.

▪ Robust real estate investment and asset management experience to include:
Sourcing and leading investment processes
Sourcing and securing investor relationships
Engagement with leaders and operators assessing investment opportunities
Managing a due diligence process; gathering, reviewing and analyzing asset, operator, and market information. Coordinating, organizing, and tracking associated work streams and schedules
Developing investment strategies and investment memos for presentation
Deep experience with the review and comprehension of supporting documents (i.e. Term
Sheets, Limited Partnership Agreements, Company Agreements, Side Letter Agreements,
Purchase and Sale Agreements, Leases, Loan Documents, Management Agreements, etc.)
Asset management, performance analytics, and regular reporting
Evaluating potential exit and refinance opportunities; and,
Managing a variety of different projects simultaneously
▪ Industry knowledge and experience across CRE sub-sectors with an emphasis on housing
▪ Investment performance benchmarking
▪ Leading and developing more junior team members
▪ Ability to travel to support the investment process, capital raising process, attend firm events, industry conferences, and support existing portfolio.
Minimum Education: Bachelor’s Degree; MBA or pertinent Master’s degree preferred
Minimum Work Experience:12+ years of experience in real estate private equity, asset management, investment banking, or transaction advisory at a top tier firm.
Job Location: Strong preference for Chicago, IL, but will consider remote candidates.
